Ugh, Why is Emotion So Hard? Building Confidence and Emotional Resilience

Have you ever asked yourself... "ughhh why is emotion so hard?" or felt that sudden urge to quit everything, simply because it all felt a bit too much?

I have. More than once.

When you choose to become visible. When you speak, share, lead or create, your emotional world comes with you. There's nowhere to hide from it, and sometimes it feels easier to just stop showing up entirely.

As I've been posting more on social media, I've received more criticism in the past month than in my entire career to date. Even when that criticism has nothing to do with the quality of my work (and I know that this is the territory that comes with becoming visible online), it can still sting.

And each time I feel that sting, I remind myself: feeling emotional doesn't mean you're not capable. It means you care. And it's part of building confidence and emotional resilience.

If I didn't care about the work I do, the people I support, or the conversations I'm trying to open, criticism wouldn't touch me at all. I would just scroll on. But the fact that I felt something means the work matters.

The real question is not: Why am I feeling this way?

The real question is: Can I stay with myself through the feeling?

Because emotional maturity isn't about never being shaken. It's about knowing the difference between "this is about me" and "this is about them". It's about being able to say, "this comment hurt, but it doesn't define me". Developing confidence and emotional resilience means being able to respond, not react.

Our work speaks for itself. Through the people we support, the progress they make, and the trust we build.

So if you're in a moment where your emotions feel loud and quitting feels easier than continuing - I see you.

Take a breath.

Pause for the evening.

Come back tomorrow.

You don't have to feel strong to be strong. You just have to keep going.
