The Unexpected Journey of Becoming More Confident

Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror and think... when did I become this person? Not in a negative way. More in that surprised, almost emotional way where you realise you've changed in ways you never expected. You've learnt things. You've pushed yourself. You've grown into someone you wouldn't have recognised a few years ago.
I had that moment recently. And I'm here for it.
It got me thinking about how quiet growth can be. It doesn't always arrive in a big announcement or after a huge event. Sometimes it's just a small realisation that you're doing things you once said you'd never do.
A year ago, during a session with one of my clients, he asked me whether I could ever see myself doing more than one to one or small group coaching. He mentioned things like larger-scale work, bigger visibility, maybe even public speaking.
I laughed. Proper laughed. Absolutely not. Me? On a bigger stage? Doing anything that required stepping that far out of my comfort zone? No thank you. I knew what I was good at. Supporting clients quietly. Staying in the safe, comfortable lane. That was the version of me I understood.
And yet somehow, without making a big show of it, things started to shift. Over the past year, I've shared more online. I've built a community of over 1200 people who follow my content because something in it resonates. One of my videos reached more than 94k views and 7200 likes. Those numbers still surprise me when I say them out loud.
The other day I was telling a friend about it all and her reply was, "You've confidence coached yourself". Amazing. I had to laugh, because she was right. I've spent years helping over 250 people build their confidence, manage self doubt and step into bigger opportunities. Meanwhile, without realising it, I'd been doing the same for myself. Slowly. Quietly. Almost behind my own back.
And now I'm planning things I never imagined I'd go near (is that a spoiler?! Watch this space). Ideas that would have terrified me a year ago. I keep finding myself stepping into moments that feel bigger than the "old me", and every so often I catch my reflection and think.. who is this woman? When did she become this brave?
Maybe that's what real growth looks like. It doesn't shout. It builds gently. One small decision at a time. One honest conversation. One moment where you stop holding yourself back. And if you're reading this thinking you're stuck, or unsure, or not ready... you might be more ready than you realise. Confidence rarely arrives in a single moment. It's a process. It's practice. It's the tiny steps that add up long before you notice what they've become.
